What is Acne?

Acne is caused by the obstruction of pilosebaceous pores (those with hair follicles). In patients with acne, the follicle sheds cells more rapidly than usual, and the cells form clumps. The skin cells and sebum create a plug in the follicle where bacteria can grow. The result is a blackhead, whitehead or pimple.

Hormones also play a role in causing acne. Beginning in puberty, hormones known as androgens increase the size and activity of the sebaceous (oil) glands. Since men secrete more androgens than women, men are more prone to acne. Likewise women's breakouts are often linked to their hormonal cycles.
