What are Canker Sores? Canker sores (aphthous stomatitis) are painful, shallow ulcers that occur on soft tissue inside the mouth. Beginning as red swellings, they rupture and become round whitish areas surrounded by red halos. The sores usually heal within two weeks although large ulcers can take longer. More women than men suffer from canker sores, and they usually first appear during the teenage years. Researchers do not completely understand what causes canker sores. They may be due in part to a malfunctioning immune system attacking healthy tissue. Suspected triggers include injury (such as accidentally biting your cheek), illness, nutritional deficiencies, stress, hormonal changes and food allergies. There is also evidence that sodium lauryl sulfate -- a detergent found in most toothpastes -- may aggravate or even cause canker sores. For cold sores and canker sores INSIDE THE MOUTH we recommend the 14ml Joshua solution. It is more concentrated and easier to apply than the 4ml roll on tube. For convenience the roll on tube should be used for daily use "out and about" and the 14ml Joshua Solution for in the home. (more info) |
